Narrative:
Flight initiated from fullerton municipal airport, ca, to palomar, ca, direct via el toro arsa. Pre-assigned squawk pre departure standard arsa transition, cruise at 3500' over santa ana. Developed radio problem midway through flight (+/-20 mins after departure). Able to receive unable to transmit. Double checked frequency, radio switch, etc to no avail. Acknowledged ATC (coast approach) by identify. Coast approach advised palomar, potential 'no radio.' proceeded to disconnect headset/intercom in flight and attempted transmission on handheld microphone. Receiving ok on #2, weak on #1, unable to transmit. Continued checks and finally able to transmit on #2 radio. Receiving was loud/clear. Monitored ATIS (palomar) some 20 mi out (over san onofre) and switched to palomar tower. Fairly heavy communication traffic in program. Performed radio check and advised position/intentions. As entering 45 for runway 24, was advised of rotary traffic below (approximately 500' MSL) and departing traffic on straight out departure. Controller appeared confused with tail #'south and aircraft types and altered instructions on downwind traffic and traffic cleared for landing. Tail dragger appeared at my 2 O'clock position, slightly above me as I was on 45 and about to turn downwind north. Took immediate action to avoid (potential) collision with sharp left turn. Observed shadow of tail dragger on ground at 7 O'clock position and proceeded downwind. Tail dragger reappeared at my 9 O'clock position on 45 degree heading directly for me. Here again horizontal distance approximately 250-300', both at pattern altitude. Took evasive turn to right while rapidly descending 200-300'. Slowed aircraft down and let tail dragger pass on left. Was cleared for landing #2. Changed by ATC to #3 (again confusion) on what traffic was where. Was asked to rock wings, proceeded and cleared for landing on #3 (tail dragger #1). Following landing I requested to meet controller and was advised 'no conflict,' other aircraft had me in sight, etc. At no time was the other pilot nor I advised of conflict(south) nor given course deviations. ATC clearly not aware of either problem and other pilot communication(south) confirmed surprised as well.

Title: DOUBLE NMAC BETWEEN 2 GA-SMA IN TRAFFIC PATTERN. SEE AND AVOID.
Narrative: FLT INITIATED FROM FULLERTON MUNI ARPT, CA, TO PALOMAR, CA, DIRECT VIA EL TORO ARSA. PRE-ASSIGNED SQUAWK PRE DEP STANDARD ARSA TRANSITION, CRUISE AT 3500' OVER SANTA ANA. DEVELOPED RADIO PROB MIDWAY THROUGH FLT (+/-20 MINS AFTER DEP). ABLE TO RECEIVE UNABLE TO XMIT. DOUBLE CHKED FREQ, RADIO SWITCH, ETC TO NO AVAIL. ACKNOWLEDGED ATC (COAST APCH) BY IDENT. COAST APCH ADVISED PALOMAR, POTENTIAL 'NO RADIO.' PROCEEDED TO DISCONNECT HEADSET/INTERCOM IN FLT AND ATTEMPTED XMISSION ON HANDHELD MIC. RECEIVING OK ON #2, WEAK ON #1, UNABLE TO XMIT. CONTINUED CHKS AND FINALLY ABLE TO XMIT ON #2 RADIO. RECEIVING WAS LOUD/CLEAR. MONITORED ATIS (PALOMAR) SOME 20 MI OUT (OVER SAN ONOFRE) AND SWITCHED TO PALOMAR TWR. FAIRLY HEAVY COM TFC IN PROGRAM. PERFORMED RADIO CHK AND ADVISED POS/INTENTIONS. AS ENTERING 45 FOR RWY 24, WAS ADVISED OF ROTARY TFC BELOW (APPROX 500' MSL) AND DEPARTING TFC ON STRAIGHT OUT DEP. CTLR APPEARED CONFUSED WITH TAIL #'S AND ACFT TYPES AND ALTERED INSTRUCTIONS ON DOWNWIND TFC AND TFC CLRED FOR LNDG. TAIL DRAGGER APPEARED AT MY 2 O'CLOCK POS, SLIGHTLY ABOVE ME AS I WAS ON 45 AND ABOUT TO TURN DOWNWIND N. TOOK IMMEDIATE ACTION TO AVOID (POTENTIAL) COLLISION WITH SHARP LEFT TURN. OBSERVED SHADOW OF TAIL DRAGGER ON GND AT 7 O'CLOCK POS AND PROCEEDED DOWNWIND. TAIL DRAGGER REAPPEARED AT MY 9 O'CLOCK POS ON 45 DEG HDG DIRECTLY FOR ME. HERE AGAIN HORIZ DISTANCE APPROX 250-300', BOTH AT PATTERN ALT. TOOK EVASIVE TURN TO RIGHT WHILE RAPIDLY DSNDING 200-300'. SLOWED ACFT DOWN AND LET TAIL DRAGGER PASS ON LEFT. WAS CLRED FOR LNDG #2. CHANGED BY ATC TO #3 (AGAIN CONFUSION) ON WHAT TFC WAS WHERE. WAS ASKED TO ROCK WINGS, PROCEEDED AND CLRED FOR LNDG ON #3 (TAIL DRAGGER #1). FOLLOWING LNDG I REQUESTED TO MEET CTLR AND WAS ADVISED 'NO CONFLICT,' OTHER ACFT HAD ME IN SIGHT, ETC. AT NO TIME WAS THE OTHER PLT NOR I ADVISED OF CONFLICT(S) NOR GIVEN COURSE DEVIATIONS. ATC CLEARLY NOT AWARE OF EITHER PROB AND OTHER PLT COM(S) CONFIRMED SURPRISED AS WELL.
