Narrative:

Scheduled air carrier operating northbound on AR7, FL330, assigned 010 degrees until receiving dixon suitable for navigation, then direct. ZJX (134.85) issued clearance to us to 'turn right 30 degrees.' 'turn right 30 degrees' was read back by captain. While in the turn, traffic was noted in our 2-3 O'clock position. Other arwys traffic was visible but no traffic was noted in our 9-10 O'clock position. At this time ZJX requested our present heading. The captain responded, '035 degrees.' center responded that, 'he gave us a 30 degree left turn.' captain responded, 'you said 30 degrees right and I acknowledged and read back 30 degrees right.' by now aircraft were closing rapidly. ZJX issued an immediate descent to FL310 to the other aircraft. We were given a left turn to heading 270 degrees. Conflicting traffic crossing in front of us at FL310, approximately 2-3 mi away. Aircraft type of conflicting aircraft was unknown. The conflict occurred because of the manner in which we were issued the turn clearance. By not assigning a specific heading to turn to, saying right and meaning left created the conflict. Also not advising us of where the traffic was located contributed to our not questioning the conflicting traffic initially. We were looking left. As the aircraft began to close, ZJX came on the air before we could question his turn instructions.

Title: ACR LGT TURNED RIGHT AS CLEARED FOR TRAFFIC SEPARATION WHEN ARTCC RADAR CTLR MEANT ACFT TO TURN LEFT.

Narrative: SCHEDULED ACR OPERATING NBOUND ON AR7, FL330, ASSIGNED 010 DEGS UNTIL RECEIVING DIXON SUITABLE FOR NAV, THEN DIRECT. ZJX (134.85) ISSUED CLRNC TO US TO 'TURN RIGHT 30 DEGS.' 'TURN RIGHT 30 DEGS' WAS READ BACK BY CAPT. WHILE IN THE TURN, TFC WAS NOTED IN OUR 2-3 O'CLOCK POS. OTHER ARWYS TFC WAS VISIBLE BUT NO TFC WAS NOTED IN OUR 9-10 O'CLOCK POS. AT THIS TIME ZJX REQUESTED OUR PRESENT HDG. THE CAPT RESPONDED, '035 DEGS.' CENTER RESPONDED THAT, 'HE GAVE US A 30 DEG LEFT TURN.' CAPT RESPONDED, 'YOU SAID 30 DEGS RIGHT AND I ACKNOWLEDGED AND READ BACK 30 DEGS RIGHT.' BY NOW ACFT WERE CLOSING RAPIDLY. ZJX ISSUED AN IMMEDIATE DSCNT TO FL310 TO THE OTHER ACFT. WE WERE GIVEN A LEFT TURN TO HDG 270 DEGS. CONFLICTING TFC XING IN FRONT OF US AT FL310, APPROX 2-3 MI AWAY. ACFT TYPE OF CONFLICTING ACFT WAS UNKNOWN. THE CONFLICT OCCURRED BECAUSE OF THE MANNER IN WHICH WE WERE ISSUED THE TURN CLRNC. BY NOT ASSIGNING A SPECIFIC HDG TO TURN TO, SAYING RIGHT AND MEANING LEFT CREATED THE CONFLICT. ALSO NOT ADVISING US OF WHERE THE TFC WAS LOCATED CONTRIBUTED TO OUR NOT QUESTIONING THE CONFLICTING TFC INITIALLY. WE WERE LOOKING LEFT. AS THE ACFT BEGAN TO CLOSE, ZJX CAME ON THE AIR BEFORE WE COULD QUESTION HIS TURN INSTRUCTIONS.
