Narrative:

We were holding short of runway 6R when I hit the takeoff configuration button and heard 'takeoff ok.' I then performed the before takeoff checklist to the line. All systems were normal. Tower then instructed us to 'line up and wait runway 6R.' we started to taxi onto the runway. Just as we were starting to lineup with the runway center line; tower instructed us to 'fly heading 035; cleared for takeoff 6R.' I then verified with the captain that we were lined up with 6R and the captain turned on all the landing lights. The captain pushed the thrust levers to the detent and held the breaks till N1 approached 80% and let go of the brakes to start the takeoff roll. The captain called 'set thrust' I looked at the EICAS and said 'thrust set' I scanned the engine instruments then scanned the pfd. Between 40-45 knots indicated we received a master caution light with a associated amber caution message on the EICAS of a 'spoiler fail.' I scanned to the lower portion of the EICAS and the spoilers were indicating 'open.' the captain saw this as well and commanded 'abort; abort.' I told tower we were aborting our takeoff on 6R and to standby. I then hit the PA button and instructed the passengers to 'remain seated; remain seated' then hit the comm 1 button. Tower wanted to know what the reason for our abort was. I stated that our spoilers had inadvertently deployed and we needed to exit the runway. They cleared us right onto a taxiway and to taxi into the pad. After arriving in the pad; we then preformed the aborted takeoff QRH items and the after landing checklist. We informed dispatch via ACARS what had occurred and if maintenance wanted us to gate return. I also called operations to secure us a gate. We were informed via ACARS to return to the gate and I secured a gate to arrive to. We arrived back to the gate without incident. We were informed they had a new aircraft for us so we deplaned; talked to maintenance; then prepared the new aircraft for the flight. The second attempt for flight occurred without incident. The threat was the spoilers deploying on the takeoff roll and that the threat of preforming an aborted takeoff was necessary. I believe all the people involved with this event preformed their duties well and with great professionalism. The threats and a possible dangerous situation were dealt with in the way they are suppose to and as safely as possible with minimum disruption in the operation while still operating safely. I believe swapping aircraft was the right choice.

Title: After a satisfactory takeoff configuration check; an EMB145 Master Caution and EICAS indicated SPOILER OPEN so the takeoff was rejected and the aircraft returned to the gate where it was removed from service.
