Narrative:
We called for clearance at sjc and were cleared loupe 5 as filed, maintain FL230 bay approach 121.3. We looked at the SID and followed the departure instructions on takeoff, climbing to the assigned altitude of FL230. Departure called and asked where we were going. My first officer stated the clearance and altitude we were told to level at 7000' and that we had traffic at 12 O'clock. We idented the traffic, leveling at 7000' at this time. The controller asked us to call when we landed, which I did. The controller stated that we were in error. However, in discussing it, he stated that the clearance was open to interpretation and could be misunderstood. I recommend that clrncs out of sjc state the correct altitude of the SID or as appropriate for the departure as this is the way I receive clrncs out of dallas, denver, salt lake city and many other major airports.

Title: ALT CROSSING RESTRICTION OVERSHOT ON SJC LOUPE 5 SID.
Narrative: WE CALLED FOR CLRNC AT SJC AND WERE CLRED LOUPE 5 AS FILED, MAINTAIN FL230 BAY APCH 121.3. WE LOOKED AT THE SID AND FOLLOWED THE DEP INSTRUCTIONS ON TKOF, CLBING TO THE ASSIGNED ALT OF FL230. DEP CALLED AND ASKED WHERE WE WERE GOING. MY F/O STATED THE CLRNC AND ALT WE WERE TOLD TO LEVEL AT 7000' AND THAT WE HAD TFC AT 12 O'CLOCK. WE IDENTED THE TFC, LEVELING AT 7000' AT THIS TIME. THE CTLR ASKED US TO CALL WHEN WE LANDED, WHICH I DID. THE CTLR STATED THAT WE WERE IN ERROR. HOWEVER, IN DISCUSSING IT, HE STATED THAT THE CLRNC WAS OPEN TO INTERP AND COULD BE MISUNDERSTOOD. I RECOMMEND THAT CLRNCS OUT OF SJC STATE THE CORRECT ALT OF THE SID OR AS APPROPRIATE FOR THE DEP AS THIS IS THE WAY I RECEIVE CLRNCS OUT OF DALLAS, DENVER, SALT LAKE CITY AND MANY OTHER MAJOR ARPTS.
