Narrative:
Received gear door EICAS message and door annunciation on the forward panel after gear retraction. We referenced the QRH; declared an emergency and returned for landing. Great job by crew and ATC. Maintenance suspected the left main landing gear door did not close after retraction. The jet was taken out of service.

Title: A B757-200 flight crew declared an emergency and returned to their departure airport following receipt of GEAR DOOR EICAS warnings after gear retraction.
Narrative: Received GEAR DOOR EICAS MESSAGE and DOOR annunciation on the forward panel after gear retraction. We referenced the QRH; declared an emergency and returned for landing. Great job by crew and ATC. Maintenance suspected the left main landing gear door did not close after retraction. The jet was taken out of service.
