Narrative:
[I] recently purchased a popular tablet computer and moving map/geo-referenced software. After receiving taxi clearance; computer locked up making geo-referenced taxiing impossible. I resorted to an approach plate diagram and proceeded to taxi. The confusion and distraction and timing of the event caused me to fail to read back my clearance and to violate a hold-short line; basic procedures I never fail to perform. No incident occurred; fortunately. I should have been prepared for a computer failure or asked for a progressive taxi. My point: these new whiz-bang gadgets are wonderful adjuncts; but result in over reliance and sloppy planning.
