Narrative:

The airplane had a deferred item 'emergency lights.' I took the MEL list to dispatch and maintenance and showed them that the MEL did not state anything about the emergency lights. They said it was part of the cockpit lighting which was deferrable. Later in the week maintenance found out from manufacturer that the emergency lights were not deferrable. Seven days later I was told by chief pilots office the lights were not deferrable.
