Narrative:
The captain was flying and at the OM on runway 32 at srq. Approach control was so busy that I said, 'switching to tower,' to the captain. The tower frequency was partially jammed by a hot microphone, but a little bit readable if everyone didn't transmit at the same time (many, many airplanes). I called twice and finally heard, 'everyone go to ground control.' the captain said to the F/east, 'you go to ground control.' the F/east answered, 'ground cleared us to land.' we were now at 100 or 200' AGL and very busy and I switched to #2 radio that the F/east was on but forgot to switch the captain, and I heard 'cleared to land,' but the captain on tower heard 'airliner on short final, go around.' I didn't hear it so he asked me and F/east and we both said, 'ground cleared us to land.' I increased vol on tower radio again and heard, 'landing airliner go around.' then the captain and I saw a light plane in the flare (same as us) on runway 4. (We were on runway 32). So, the captain said, 'we're going around.' then we saw the light plane going around in a sharp left to to parallel our go around and we turned right away from the conflict. Then we contacted departure control who gave us a heading but no altitude, but I dialed in 1500' and the captain leveled there. Then things went normal after that.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LGT MADE GO AROUND DUE TO ANOTHER ACFT LNDG ON CROSSING RWY.
Narrative: THE CAPT WAS FLYING AND AT THE OM ON RWY 32 AT SRQ. APCH CTL WAS SO BUSY THAT I SAID, 'SWITCHING TO TWR,' TO THE CAPT. THE TWR FREQ WAS PARTIALLY JAMMED BY A HOT MIC, BUT A LITTLE BIT READABLE IF EVERYONE DIDN'T XMIT AT THE SAME TIME (MANY, MANY AIRPLANES). I CALLED TWICE AND FINALLY HEARD, 'EVERYONE GO TO GND CTL.' THE CAPT SAID TO THE F/E, 'YOU GO TO GND CTL.' THE F/E ANSWERED, 'GND CLRED US TO LAND.' WE WERE NOW AT 100 OR 200' AGL AND VERY BUSY AND I SWITCHED TO #2 RADIO THAT THE F/E WAS ON BUT FORGOT TO SWITCH THE CAPT, AND I HEARD 'CLRED TO LAND,' BUT THE CAPT ON TWR HEARD 'AIRLINER ON SHORT FINAL, GO AROUND.' I DIDN'T HEAR IT SO HE ASKED ME AND F/E AND WE BOTH SAID, 'GND CLRED US TO LAND.' I INCREASED VOL ON TWR RADIO AGAIN AND HEARD, 'LNDG AIRLINER GO AROUND.' THEN THE CAPT AND I SAW A LIGHT PLANE IN THE FLARE (SAME AS US) ON RWY 4. (WE WERE ON RWY 32). SO, THE CAPT SAID, 'WE'RE GOING AROUND.' THEN WE SAW THE LIGHT PLANE GOING AROUND IN A SHARP LEFT TO TO PARALLEL OUR GO AROUND AND WE TURNED RIGHT AWAY FROM THE CONFLICT. THEN WE CONTACTED DEP CTL WHO GAVE US A HDG BUT NO ALT, BUT I DIALED IN 1500' AND THE CAPT LEVELED THERE. THEN THINGS WENT NORMAL AFTER THAT.
