Narrative:

Because of the work I do I usually take my service revolver with me. However, I have never taken it on a commercial flight before. I always fly in a company plane. The revolver was secured in a black leather holster and locked inside my briefcase. I checked all of my luggage including my briefcase instead of carrying it on board with me. When I arrived in boise I discovered that my briefcase had been broken into and the only thing missing was my revolver and holster. Upon reporting the loss to airlines, it was located in salt lake city, ut, and had been turned over to the salt lake police department. It is my understanding that the revolver was loaded at the time it was found, which I'm told is a violation of federal law. I have never taken it with me on a commercial flight before as I always go in a company plane. I had no intention of flying on a commercial flight this time. I was very tired the morning I left grand forks and was very anxious to get home. I never really gave it a thought that I could have been doing something illegal.

Title: LOADED REVOLVER FOUND IN LOCKED PASSENGER BRIEFCASE BY SLC ARPT SECURITY. BRIEFCASE HAD BEEN CHECKED THROUGH TO SLC WHEN BOARDING AT GFK. THE BAGGAGE PASSED THROUGH MSP WITH AN AIRLINE CHANGE BUT WAS NOT DETECTED UNTIL SLC.

Narrative: BECAUSE OF THE WORK I DO I USUALLY TAKE MY SVC REVOLVER WITH ME. HOWEVER, I HAVE NEVER TAKEN IT ON A COMMERCIAL FLT BEFORE. I ALWAYS FLY IN A COMPANY PLANE. THE REVOLVER WAS SECURED IN A BLACK LEATHER HOLSTER AND LOCKED INSIDE MY BRIEFCASE. I CHKED ALL OF MY LUGGAGE INCLUDING MY BRIEFCASE INSTEAD OF CARRYING IT ON BOARD WITH ME. WHEN I ARRIVED IN BOISE I DISCOVERED THAT MY BRIEFCASE HAD BEEN BROKEN INTO AND THE ONLY THING MISSING WAS MY REVOLVER AND HOLSTER. UPON RPTING THE LOSS TO AIRLINES, IT WAS LOCATED IN SALT LAKE CITY, UT, AND HAD BEEN TURNED OVER TO THE SALT LAKE POLICE DEPT. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THE REVOLVER WAS LOADED AT THE TIME IT WAS FOUND, WHICH I'M TOLD IS A VIOLATION OF FEDERAL LAW.
