Narrative:
At approximately xa I arrived at cle after arriving from buttonville, ontario, canada, and cleared customs at the main terminal. Upon clearing customs I requested from clearance delivery a VFR departure to I40. Clearance issued VFR departure, turn right heading 090 degrees after takeoff squawk code was indicated. Clearance to taxi to runway 5. Upon taxiing to runway 5 I indicated to ground controller that I would accept intersection departure. Ground controller denied request indicating that there were approximately 6 departures ahead of me and to continue taxiing and by the time reaching the end of runway 5 I should be ready for departure. Upon completing runup I was issued clear for takeoff with no hold time for wake turbulence. While doing runup I observed departure of several heavy jets and decided the heading 090 degrees should not pose a problem, although jet did takeoff to the east. After being cleared for takeoff I started takeoff roll and noticed that transponder was not set to correct code. Because power up had already been initiated I continued roll and decided to reset transponder after achieving vy. Slightly after rotation and prior to reaching vy I started to reset transponder and immediately encountered severe wake turbulence. After regaining control of the airplane I made immediate evasive action by continuing climb and trying to maneuver south and continued a southerly heading in an effort to evade the turbulence area and remain clear of same. I established airplane at vx to assure continued terrain clearance and was very concerned at this point with the structural integrity of the airplane. Tower called to reprimand me about turning prior to the end of the runway. Visibly shaken by the incident and not wanting to deviate attention from watching for other traffic and continuing to secure the airplane while maintaining proper climb attitude I responded with simply, 'thank you.' tower then called again requesting heading. Because I had not yet had an opportunity to reset the dg and to verify that it was correct and reliable a slight delay was encountered while I read the magnetic compass. I was reprimanded again indicating that I was not on the assigned heading. Tower wanted to know where the flight originated and I indicated that it originated out of buttonville, ontario, canada, and that I was en route to I40 and maintained current heading. Tower requested what transponder setting I was on. I requested to 'say again,' remembering that I had not reset the transponder (obviously not a priority item to me after encountering the above stated turbulence). I immediately set transponder to the appropriate code and read back same. Tower controller stated, 'that's not what you were squawking.' after a short delay tower indicated he wanted me to stand by to copy a phone #. I indicated to go ahead. After copying the phone # the controller requested that I call the tower upon arrival at destination.

Title: REPORTER ACFT ENCOUNTERED SEVERE WAKE TURBULENCE IMMEDIATELY AFTER RESULTING IN MOMENTARY LOSS OF ACFT CONTROL.
Narrative: AT APPROX XA I ARRIVED AT CLE AFTER ARRIVING FROM BUTTONVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, AND CLRED CUSTOMS AT THE MAIN TERMINAL. UPON CLRING CUSTOMS I REQUESTED FROM CLRNC DELIVERY A VFR DEP TO I40. CLRNC ISSUED VFR DEP, TURN RIGHT HDG 090 DEGS AFTER TKOF SQUAWK CODE WAS INDICATED. CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 5. UPON TAXIING TO RWY 5 I INDICATED TO GND CTLR THAT I WOULD ACCEPT INTXN DEP. GND CTLR DENIED REQUEST INDICATING THAT THERE WERE APPROX 6 DEPS AHEAD OF ME AND TO CONTINUE TAXIING AND BY THE TIME REACHING THE END OF RWY 5 I SHOULD BE READY FOR DEP. UPON COMPLETING RUNUP I WAS ISSUED CLR FOR TKOF WITH NO HOLD TIME FOR WAKE TURB. WHILE DOING RUNUP I OBSERVED DEP OF SEVERAL HVY JETS AND DECIDED THE HDG 090 DEGS SHOULD NOT POSE A PROB, ALTHOUGH JET DID TKOF TO THE E. AFTER BEING CLRED FOR TKOF I STARTED TKOF ROLL AND NOTICED THAT XPONDER WAS NOT SET TO CORRECT CODE. BECAUSE PWR UP HAD ALREADY BEEN INITIATED I CONTINUED ROLL AND DECIDED TO RESET XPONDER AFTER ACHIEVING VY. SLIGHTLY AFTER ROTATION AND PRIOR TO REACHING VY I STARTED TO RESET XPONDER AND IMMEDIATELY ENCOUNTERED SEVERE WAKE TURB. AFTER REGAINING CONTROL OF THE AIRPLANE I MADE IMMEDIATE EVASIVE ACTION BY CONTINUING CLB AND TRYING TO MANEUVER S AND CONTINUED A SOUTHERLY HDG IN AN EFFORT TO EVADE THE TURB AREA AND REMAIN CLR OF SAME. I ESTABLISHED AIRPLANE AT VX TO ASSURE CONTINUED TERRAIN CLRNC AND WAS VERY CONCERNED AT THIS POINT WITH THE STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE AIRPLANE. TWR CALLED TO REPRIMAND ME ABOUT TURNING PRIOR TO THE END OF THE RWY. VISIBLY SHAKEN BY THE INCIDENT AND NOT WANTING TO DEVIATE ATTN FROM WATCHING FOR OTHER TFC AND CONTINUING TO SECURE THE AIRPLANE WHILE MAINTAINING PROPER CLB ATTITUDE I RESPONDED WITH SIMPLY, 'THANK YOU.' TWR THEN CALLED AGAIN REQUESTING HDG. BECAUSE I HAD NOT YET HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO RESET THE DG AND TO VERIFY THAT IT WAS CORRECT AND RELIABLE A SLIGHT DELAY WAS ENCOUNTERED WHILE I READ THE MAG COMPASS. I WAS REPRIMANDED AGAIN INDICATING THAT I WAS NOT ON THE ASSIGNED HDG. TWR WANTED TO KNOW WHERE THE FLT ORIGINATED AND I INDICATED THAT IT ORIGINATED OUT OF BUTTONVILLE, ONTARIO, CANADA, AND THAT I WAS ENRTE TO I40 AND MAINTAINED CURRENT HDG. TWR REQUESTED WHAT XPONDER SETTING I WAS ON. I REQUESTED TO 'SAY AGAIN,' REMEMBERING THAT I HAD NOT RESET THE XPONDER (OBVIOUSLY NOT A PRIORITY ITEM TO ME AFTER ENCOUNTERING THE ABOVE STATED TURB). I IMMEDIATELY SET XPONDER TO THE APPROPRIATE CODE AND READ BACK SAME. TWR CTLR STATED, 'THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU WERE SQUAWKING.' AFTER A SHORT DELAY TWR INDICATED HE WANTED ME TO STAND BY TO COPY A PHONE #. I INDICATED TO GO AHEAD. AFTER COPYING THE PHONE # THE CTLR REQUESTED THAT I CALL THE TWR UPON ARR AT DEST.
