Narrative:
Aircraft was sitting on maintenance ramp at FBO. Aircraft was to be flown to springfield, il, for return to service. I received a taxi clearance as follows: cleared to runway 12R via runway 31 to cross runway 24 at foxtrot, turn left on microphone, hold short of 12R at microphone. Aircraft left the ramp at kilo instead of november, made a right turn onto runway 35 (which was not in operation, as well as runway 31). After taxiing a few moments, I noticed that things did not look right. I looked at my heading indicator and saw that it was showing a 350 degree heading. I proceeded to the end of the runway and turned left on runway 24, which also was not in operation at this time. In the fog, I missed foxtrot taxiway, which would have taken me to taxiway microphone, then to runway 13L at the end. At this point I realized that I was disorientated as to exactly where I was, so I proceeded down runway 24 to papa taxiway. I made a left turn on papa, then a right turn on taxiway charlie and held short of runway 12R. At this point I appeared out of the fog to the tower. The ground controller asked me, 'how did you get there?' I replied, 'I got lost back there.' before I could continue and explain my route, the controller said, 'were you aware that you crossed an active runway?' I replied, 'no, I was not aware of that!' the controller then said, 'I don't know what to do with you now! Contact tower.' I found out later in the day that the controller filed a violation with the local GADO office for a runway incursion. Mitigating circumstances I feel were important. 1) low visibility in fog making taxiing difficult. 2) departing ramp from the wrong taxiway. 3) knowing I was departing in low ceiling and visibility with an aircraft that just had an engine change the previous day. 4) not being aware of being schedule to fly to st louis to pick up the aircraft until 9 mins before the flight. 5) having a pregnant wife at home 3 days overdue who would not be able to contact me due to the schedule change.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: SMT LEFT GA AREA ON ARPT IN LOW VISIBILITY CONDITIONS. TURNED WRONG WAY ON TXWY. BECAME DISORIENTED. USED WRONG TAXIWAYS AND CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. NO CONFLICT. CTLR LATER FILED VIOLATION.
Narrative: ACFT WAS SITTING ON MAINT RAMP AT FBO. ACFT WAS TO BE FLOWN TO SPRINGFIELD, IL, FOR RETURN TO SVC. I RECEIVED A TAXI CLRNC AS FOLLOWS: CLRED TO RWY 12R VIA RWY 31 TO CROSS RWY 24 AT FOXTROT, TURN LEFT ON MIKE, HOLD SHORT OF 12R AT MIKE. ACFT LEFT THE RAMP AT KILO INSTEAD OF NOVEMBER, MADE A RIGHT TURN ONTO RWY 35 (WHICH WAS NOT IN OPERATION, AS WELL AS RWY 31). AFTER TAXIING A FEW MOMENTS, I NOTICED THAT THINGS DID NOT LOOK RIGHT. I LOOKED AT MY HDG INDICATOR AND SAW THAT IT WAS SHOWING A 350 DEG HDG. I PROCEEDED TO THE END OF THE RWY AND TURNED LEFT ON RWY 24, WHICH ALSO WAS NOT IN OPERATION AT THIS TIME. IN THE FOG, I MISSED FOXTROT TXWY, WHICH WOULD HAVE TAKEN ME TO TXWY MIKE, THEN TO RWY 13L AT THE END. AT THIS POINT I REALIZED THAT I WAS DISORIENTATED AS TO EXACTLY WHERE I WAS, SO I PROCEEDED DOWN RWY 24 TO PAPA TXWY. I MADE A LEFT TURN ON PAPA, THEN A RIGHT TURN ON TXWY CHARLIE AND HELD SHORT OF RWY 12R. AT THIS POINT I APPEARED OUT OF THE FOG TO THE TWR. THE GND CTLR ASKED ME, 'HOW DID YOU GET THERE?' I REPLIED, 'I GOT LOST BACK THERE.' BEFORE I COULD CONTINUE AND EXPLAIN MY ROUTE, THE CTLR SAID, 'WERE YOU AWARE THAT YOU CROSSED AN ACTIVE RWY?' I REPLIED, 'NO, I WAS NOT AWARE OF THAT!' THE CTLR THEN SAID, 'I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH YOU NOW! CONTACT TWR.' I FOUND OUT LATER IN THE DAY THAT THE CTLR FILED A VIOLATION WITH THE LCL GADO OFFICE FOR A RWY INCURSION. MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES I FEEL WERE IMPORTANT. 1) LOW VISIBILITY IN FOG MAKING TAXIING DIFFICULT. 2) DEPARTING RAMP FROM THE WRONG TXWY. 3) KNOWING I WAS DEPARTING IN LOW CEILING AND VISIBILITY WITH AN ACFT THAT JUST HAD AN ENGINE CHANGE THE PREVIOUS DAY. 4) NOT BEING AWARE OF BEING SCHEDULE TO FLY TO ST LOUIS TO PICK UP THE ACFT UNTIL 9 MINS BEFORE THE FLT. 5) HAVING A PREGNANT WIFE AT HOME 3 DAYS OVERDUE WHO WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CONTACT ME DUE TO THE SCHEDULE CHANGE.
