Narrative:
Flying VFR, I was approaching arrival from the north, southbound for landing. The landing runway was 36. When I reported 2 mi northwest, I was informed that I was #2 for landing. The aircraft in front was a high wing sel aircraft, similar to the small aircraft that I was flying. This aircraft flew a very long downwind leg before turning base. In order to maintain my sep I extended my downwind leg, possibly more than necessary. I turned onto my base leg, I heard ATC tell a third landing aircraft that there was traffic well ahead. I came to a stop facing north just north of the intersection of runways 36 and 09, then turned left onto runway 09. Just before I cleared runway 36, I heard ATC tell another aircraft to go around. There was insufficient sep between me and the following aircraft, which was another sel aircraft like my aircraft. I became aware of the problem when I heard ATC tell the following aircraft to go around. Then I saw the conflicting aircraft. I did not consider accelerating my taxi until after the incident had passed. The preceding aircraft flew a very long downwind leg. I may have overreacted by extending my downwind too far. I forgot about the following aircraft. I am unclear about what ATC told me just after I landed. I was too close to the aircraft in front of me. I forgot about the following aircraft. I failed to listen closely to ATC instructions after landing. I did not expedite my taxi off the runway. My ability to listen to ATC is not as good as it could be. I need to buy a headset.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA-SMA FAILED TO CLEAR RWY CAUSING FOLLOWING SMA TO GO AROUND.
Narrative: FLYING VFR, I WAS APCHING ARR FROM THE N, SBND FOR LNDG. THE LNDG RWY WAS 36. WHEN I RPTED 2 MI NW, I WAS INFORMED THAT I WAS #2 FOR LNDG. THE ACFT IN FRONT WAS A HIGH WING SEL ACFT, SIMILAR TO THE SMA THAT I WAS FLYING. THIS ACFT FLEW A VERY LONG DOWNWIND LEG BEFORE TURNING BASE. IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN MY SEP I EXTENDED MY DOWNWIND LEG, POSSIBLY MORE THAN NECESSARY. I TURNED ONTO MY BASE LEG, I HEARD ATC TELL A THIRD LNDG ACFT THAT THERE WAS TFC WELL AHEAD. I CAME TO A STOP FACING N JUST N OF THE INTXN OF RWYS 36 AND 09, THEN TURNED LEFT ONTO RWY 09. JUST BEFORE I CLRED RWY 36, I HEARD ATC TELL ANOTHER ACFT TO GO AROUND. THERE WAS INSUFFICIENT SEP BTWN ME AND THE FOLLOWING ACFT, WHICH WAS ANOTHER SEL ACFT LIKE MY ACFT. I BECAME AWARE OF THE PROB WHEN I HEARD ATC TELL THE FOLLOWING ACFT TO GO AROUND. THEN I SAW THE CONFLICTING ACFT. I DID NOT CONSIDER ACCELERATING MY TAXI UNTIL AFTER THE INCIDENT HAD PASSED. THE PRECEDING ACFT FLEW A VERY LONG DOWNWIND LEG. I MAY HAVE OVERREACTED BY EXTENDING MY DOWNWIND TOO FAR. I FORGOT ABOUT THE FOLLOWING ACFT. I AM UNCLEAR ABOUT WHAT ATC TOLD ME JUST AFTER I LANDED. I WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE ACFT IN FRONT OF ME. I FORGOT ABOUT THE FOLLOWING ACFT. I FAILED TO LISTEN CLOSELY TO ATC INSTRUCTIONS AFTER LNDG. I DID NOT EXPEDITE MY TAXI OFF THE RWY. MY ABILITY TO LISTEN TO ATC IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT COULD BE. I NEED TO BUY A HEADSET.
