Narrative:
We had an APU problem. When we called maintenance the mechanic came out and looked up in the aft equipment bay and noticed that the APU door was sitting between the rudder and elevator cables. I don't know how long it had been that way since it was our first flight in the plane.I don't know the cause; other than the last time someone worked on the plane they did not put the door back on.
