Narrative:
I was cleared for takeoff on 11L at jeffco airport. After obtaining permission for a left hand turnout I began my takeoff and climbed for 300-400' before turning left and continuing to climb at vy. After several mins control tower called and asked, 'did you turn left mid-downwind because you assumed no one was flying downwind?' I responded, 'negative, you gave me permission to turn left on course.' control tower responded, 'yes, but you are supposed to turn on course after flying the length of the runway.' I responded, 'roger.' I was not aware that I had to fly nearly 2 mi before turning on course (the length of the runway is 9000'). I will, of course, check into this further. On mention was made of my action until I was about 8 mi from the airport. There were 2 other planes under control of the tower at the time. Furthermore, I feel their manner of questioning me was close to entrapment. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states that during his just completed bi-annual flight review conducted in casper, wy, the supervising flight instrument advised him to begin his turn on course as soon as possible after takeoff. Analyst and reporter spent considerable time discussing the advisability of, as well as the consequences of, such actions.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AFTER TKOF REPORTER BEGAN APPROVED LEFT TURN ON COURSE AT AN ALT OF 300-400' AGL PRIOR TO REACHING THE RWY END.
Narrative: I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON 11L AT JEFFCO ARPT. AFTER OBTAINING PERMISSION FOR A LEFT HAND TURNOUT I BEGAN MY TKOF AND CLBED FOR 300-400' BEFORE TURNING LEFT AND CONTINUING TO CLB AT VY. AFTER SEVERAL MINS CTL TWR CALLED AND ASKED, 'DID YOU TURN LEFT MID-DOWNWIND BECAUSE YOU ASSUMED NO ONE WAS FLYING DOWNWIND?' I RESPONDED, 'NEGATIVE, YOU GAVE ME PERMISSION TO TURN LEFT ON COURSE.' CTL TWR RESPONDED, 'YES, BUT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO TURN ON COURSE AFTER FLYING THE LENGTH OF THE RWY.' I RESPONDED, 'ROGER.' I WAS NOT AWARE THAT I HAD TO FLY NEARLY 2 MI BEFORE TURNING ON COURSE (THE LENGTH OF THE RWY IS 9000'). I WILL, OF COURSE, CHK INTO THIS FURTHER. ON MENTION WAS MADE OF MY ACTION UNTIL I WAS ABOUT 8 MI FROM THE ARPT. THERE WERE 2 OTHER PLANES UNDER CTL OF THE TWR AT THE TIME. FURTHERMORE, I FEEL THEIR MANNER OF QUESTIONING ME WAS CLOSE TO ENTRAPMENT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR STATES THAT DURING HIS JUST COMPLETED BI-ANNUAL FLT REVIEW CONDUCTED IN CASPER, WY, THE SUPERVISING FLT INSTR ADVISED HIM TO BEGIN HIS TURN ON COURSE ASAP AFTER TKOF. ANALYST AND RPTR SPENT CONSIDERABLE TIME DISCUSSING THE ADVISABILITY OF, AS WELL AS THE CONSEQUENCES OF, SUCH ACTIONS.
