Narrative:

Following a VFR local pleasure flight to the vicinity of rancho, ca, and a taxi back landing at the new french valley airport, I picked up a pop-up IFR clearance to hhr to terminate in a full stop landing. Approach was normal with handoff from lax approach control to hhr tower occurring prior to wellz intersection. My speed was approximately 160 KTS. My intention was to descend at published points and make final confign (gear down, no flaps) at hashy intersection. As I was descending between wellz and hashy, hhr tower advised me to slow to 'approach speed,' or 'slowest approach speed,' or something similar because they had a VFR small aircraft turning base to final 1 mi in front of me. After reducing (140 KTS) speed, I placed the landing gear handle down, felt the aircraft decelerate further and slowed to 120 KTS and extended the flaps. Throughout this unexpected maneuvering, I was watching the aircraft ahead and xchking my approach because the field was not visible in the haze. Continuing the approach everything seemed normal. I did not hear a gear horn at any time. The small aircraft cleared the runway as I was about 1/2 mi final, so I was cleared to land. As I was in the flare, the tower called, 'go around.' I immediately throttled to full power and heard a sharp, rasping sound. The engine was running fine and as the climb was initiated I reached for the gear, but the yellow light was on so as long as I could maintain a climb, I left the confign the way it was, including flaps. On downwind, I moved the gear lever to down, firmly. The gear extended and a normal landing was made. Damage: propeller tips, extreme inboard flaps underside scraped, ILS antenna on belly cracked. Am having gear activation switch checked.

Title: APCH WITH GEAR UP. TWR SAID GO AROUND, PLT SAW YELLOW LIGHT WHEN REACHING TO RETRACT GEAR.

Narrative: FOLLOWING A VFR LCL PLEASURE FLT TO THE VICINITY OF RANCHO, CA, AND A TAXI BACK LNDG AT THE NEW FRENCH VALLEY ARPT, I PICKED UP A POP-UP IFR CLRNC TO HHR TO TERMINATE IN A FULL STOP LNDG. APCH WAS NORMAL WITH HDOF FROM LAX APCH CTL TO HHR TWR OCCURRING PRIOR TO WELLZ INTXN. MY SPD WAS APPROX 160 KTS. MY INTENTION WAS TO DSND AT PUBLISHED POINTS AND MAKE FINAL CONFIGN (GEAR DOWN, NO FLAPS) AT HASHY INTXN. AS I WAS DSNDING BTWN WELLZ AND HASHY, HHR TWR ADVISED ME TO SLOW TO 'APCH SPD,' OR 'SLOWEST APCH SPD,' OR SOMETHING SIMILAR BECAUSE THEY HAD A VFR SMA TURNING BASE TO FINAL 1 MI IN FRONT OF ME. AFTER REDUCING (140 KTS) SPD, I PLACED THE LNDG GEAR HANDLE DOWN, FELT THE ACFT DECELERATE FURTHER AND SLOWED TO 120 KTS AND EXTENDED THE FLAPS. THROUGHOUT THIS UNEXPECTED MANEUVERING, I WAS WATCHING THE ACFT AHEAD AND XCHKING MY APCH BECAUSE THE FIELD WAS NOT VISIBLE IN THE HAZE. CONTINUING THE APCH EVERYTHING SEEMED NORMAL. I DID NOT HEAR A GEAR HORN AT ANY TIME. THE SMA CLRED THE RWY AS I WAS ABOUT 1/2 MI FINAL, SO I WAS CLRED TO LAND. AS I WAS IN THE FLARE, THE TWR CALLED, 'GO AROUND.' I IMMEDIATELY THROTTLED TO FULL PWR AND HEARD A SHARP, RASPING SOUND. THE ENG WAS RUNNING FINE AND AS THE CLB WAS INITIATED I REACHED FOR THE GEAR, BUT THE YELLOW LIGHT WAS ON SO AS LONG AS I COULD MAINTAIN A CLB, I LEFT THE CONFIGN THE WAY IT WAS, INCLUDING FLAPS. ON DOWNWIND, I MOVED THE GEAR LEVER TO DOWN, FIRMLY. THE GEAR EXTENDED AND A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE. DAMAGE: PROP TIPS, EXTREME INBOARD FLAPS UNDERSIDE SCRAPED, ILS ANTENNA ON BELLY CRACKED. AM HAVING GEAR ACTIVATION SWITCH CHKED.
