Narrative:
Shortly after takeoff and cleanup the number one engine oil filter bypass light started flashing then remained on steady. Per the oil filter bypass checklist; because the light remained illuminated after the number one thrust lever was closed; we were directed to the engine shutdown checklist. The malfunctioning engine was shut down per this checklist. All associated emergency and normal checklists were accomplished. An inflight emergency was declared and arff was requested and dispatched. We had an uneventful landing; (below max landing weight) back at [departure airport]. The voice recorder circuit breaker was pulled and noted in the log book.
