Narrative:

On approach; [another aircraft] was inbound from west. He reported on base. I mistakenly flew an opposite downwind since I know the airport does not like left traffic for runway xx (otherwise I would have flown over toward the southeast to make a left base). I decided to descend and try to stay out of the way. I did not have him in sight until I started to turn 180 degrees back for a right downwind. At this point he broke off approach and I went over to circle until he landed.
