Narrative:
Fire light illuminated in number 2 engine fire handle accompanied by fire bell. One detection loop of this engine was deferred. Although engine indications were normal; we elected to follow the engine fire checklist. After shutdown; the system tested [badly] so we discharged one fire bottle. We followed the checklist to landing at our planned destination. Fire response confirmed that there was no actual fire and we taxied to the gate.
