Narrative:
During the weekend ads hosted the dallas grand prix. Fortunately, the airport was kept open for both arrs and departures during the event. The race track utilized the south end of runway 15 and stands were erected on the east and west end of the runway, predominantly on the east. The airport was abnormally busy due to the race events. I encountered a delay of approximately 25 mins. On a few occasions I questioned the controller on the length of the delay because of my concern over burning my reserve fuel. I eventually stopped questioning the controller because he was sounding irritated. Finally I was cleared for takeoff. Just after rotation the tower controller warned me of an aircraft above me at 12 O'clock. I spotted the aircraft which appeared to be on a crosswind leg approaching the departure end of runway 15 at a pattern altitude of approximately 700-900'. Had I maintain runway heading and climbed at a normal rate I would have been on a collision course. I chose not to fly beneath the aircraft due to the large # of spectators below and ground obstructions. I chose not to try to climb above aircraft. Since I would have lost sight of the plane. I chose not to turn right because of the spectators on the right side of the runway and because my IFR clearance called for a left turn to 100 degrees. Thus, I turned left and expedited my climb to give a safe altitude over the race event. I notified the tower of my intentions while performing the evasive maneuver. After I was clear of the traffic the tower asked if I had heard the ATIS--I assume he was referring to the straight out climb procedure the ATIS called for. I answered affirmative and explained my evasive maneuver. I received no answer. I explained my procedure again and asked to call departure. Again I received no answer. Finally I was told to call departure.

Title: PLT OF PRIVATE SMT DEPARTING ADS DURING GRAND PRIX EVENT UPON ROTATION OBSERVED AN ACFT ABOVE ON A CROSSING COURSE. PLT ELECTED TO TURN AND CLIMB DESPITE ATIS ADVICE TO PROCEED STRAIGHT OUT. TWR CTLR QUESTIONED PLT REGARDING HIS TURN.
Narrative: DURING THE WEEKEND ADS HOSTED THE DALLAS GRAND PRIX. FORTUNATELY, THE ARPT WAS KEPT OPEN FOR BOTH ARRS AND DEPS DURING THE EVENT. THE RACE TRACK UTILIZED THE S END OF RWY 15 AND STANDS WERE ERECTED ON THE E AND W END OF THE RWY, PREDOMINANTLY ON THE E. THE ARPT WAS ABNORMALLY BUSY DUE TO THE RACE EVENTS. I ENCOUNTERED A DELAY OF APPROX 25 MINS. ON A FEW OCCASIONS I QUESTIONED THE CTLR ON THE LENGTH OF THE DELAY BECAUSE OF MY CONCERN OVER BURNING MY RESERVE FUEL. I EVENTUALLY STOPPED QUESTIONING THE CTLR BECAUSE HE WAS SOUNDING IRRITATED. FINALLY I WAS CLRED FOR TKOF. JUST AFTER ROTATION THE TWR CTLR WARNED ME OF AN ACFT ABOVE ME AT 12 O'CLOCK. I SPOTTED THE ACFT WHICH APPEARED TO BE ON A XWIND LEG APCHING THE DEP END OF RWY 15 AT A PATTERN ALT OF APPROX 700-900'. HAD I MAINTAIN RWY HDG AND CLBED AT A NORMAL RATE I WOULD HAVE BEEN ON A COLLISION COURSE. I CHOSE NOT TO FLY BENEATH THE ACFT DUE TO THE LARGE # OF SPECTATORS BELOW AND GND OBSTRUCTIONS. I CHOSE NOT TO TRY TO CLB ABOVE ACFT. SINCE I WOULD HAVE LOST SIGHT OF THE PLANE. I CHOSE NOT TO TURN RIGHT BECAUSE OF THE SPECTATORS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE RWY AND BECAUSE MY IFR CLRNC CALLED FOR A LEFT TURN TO 100 DEGS. THUS, I TURNED LEFT AND EXPEDITED MY CLB TO GIVE A SAFE ALT OVER THE RACE EVENT. I NOTIFIED THE TWR OF MY INTENTIONS WHILE PERFORMING THE EVASIVE MANEUVER. AFTER I WAS CLR OF THE TFC THE TWR ASKED IF I HAD HEARD THE ATIS--I ASSUME HE WAS REFERRING TO THE STRAIGHT OUT CLB PROC THE ATIS CALLED FOR. I ANSWERED AFFIRMATIVE AND EXPLAINED MY EVASIVE MANEUVER. I RECEIVED NO ANSWER. I EXPLAINED MY PROC AGAIN AND ASKED TO CALL DEP. AGAIN I RECEIVED NO ANSWER. FINALLY I WAS TOLD TO CALL DEP.
