Narrative:

I was flying to ourktown, sd, from millcuka, 20 mi from ft dodge VOR when I lost the engine. I notified ZMP, did the emergency checks and picked the field. After landing, I noticed oil all over the nose strut and right main landing gear. Upon opening the right aft corner of the engine cowling we noticed the magneto (single drive duel magnetic) was hanging off the engine by the leads. I then remembered the aircraft was in being services that day, earlier in the morning for a magnetic problem. It was rebuilt and put back on. Basically, the airplane was landing excellent condition except of course for the magneto. The problem arises from if the FAA researches the log books, or the aircraft, they may find that a current pitot static test and transponder test is not listed and may not be current for the aircraft. This, on an IFR flight plan, may be in violation of 91.170.171. The moral of the story is basically look (physically inspect) the log books of different aircraft you fly to observe the rules. I guess you can't just take the word of the owner of the aircraft as to its maintenance record.

Title: ENGINE FAILURE IN SINGLE ENGINE ACFT DUE TO MAGNETO BECOMING DETACHED ON FIRST FLT AFTER MAGNETO WAS SERVICED. FORCED LNDG SUCCESSFULLY EXECUTED WITHOUT DAMAGE TO ACFT. REPORTER CONCERNED THAT OTHER ANOMALIES WOULD BE DISCOVERED UPON OFFICIAL REVIEW OF ACFT LOG BOOKS.
