Narrative:
First officer called for taxi clearance and received clearance to taxi to runway 31. He read it back and as we started to move I repeated, 'cleared to 31,' which he confirmed. We then started on the taxi checklist. Even though we both knew we were cleared to 31, I somehow started taxiing to runway 4L--probably from habit. I probably have flown into this airport no more than 3 or 4 times in the last 6 months. However, I am familiar with the layout. Most of the time lately my departures from here are on either 4L or 22R. As we approached 31 taxiing southwest on taxiway 1 I visually checked left and called, 'clear left.' the first officer called, 'clear right.' there was no other traffic. After we crossed the runway 31 ground told us he wanted us to go to 31 and I realized we had been headed for the wrong runway. Crew had been on duty since XX30 and this was last leg of seven leg day. Crew had flown 7 hours up to this point. First officer was not very familiar with this airport. Probably all possible factors.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MDT CLEARED TO RWY 31 AT IND, TAXIED ACROSS 31 WITH MINDSET THAT THEY WERE GOING TO RWY 4L. TWR CTLR INTERVENED.
Narrative: F/O CALLED FOR TAXI CLRNC AND RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 31. HE READ IT BACK AND AS WE STARTED TO MOVE I REPEATED, 'CLRED TO 31,' WHICH HE CONFIRMED. WE THEN STARTED ON THE TAXI CHKLIST. EVEN THOUGH WE BOTH KNEW WE WERE CLRED TO 31, I SOMEHOW STARTED TAXIING TO RWY 4L--PROBABLY FROM HABIT. I PROBABLY HAVE FLOWN INTO THIS ARPT NO MORE THAN 3 OR 4 TIMES IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS. HOWEVER, I AM FAMILIAR WITH THE LAYOUT. MOST OF THE TIME LATELY MY DEPS FROM HERE ARE ON EITHER 4L OR 22R. AS WE APCHED 31 TAXIING SW ON TXWY 1 I VISUALLY CHKED LEFT AND CALLED, 'CLR LEFT.' THE F/O CALLED, 'CLR RIGHT.' THERE WAS NO OTHER TFC. AFTER WE CROSSED THE RWY 31 GND TOLD US HE WANTED US TO GO TO 31 AND I REALIZED WE HAD BEEN HEADED FOR THE WRONG RWY. CREW HAD BEEN ON DUTY SINCE XX30 AND THIS WAS LAST LEG OF SEVEN LEG DAY. CREW HAD FLOWN 7 HRS UP TO THIS POINT. F/O WAS NOT VERY FAMILIAR WITH THIS ARPT. PROBABLY ALL POSSIBLE FACTORS.
