Narrative:

Cruising at FL240, given clearance to cross 30 mi southwest of bna at 8000'. Position at time was approximately 60 mi southwest of ghm. Approaching ghm, center asked if we would make our crossing (approximately 20 mi to lose 16,000' and slow to 250 KTS). I immediately turned off autoplt, deployed speed brakes and started descent. Once in descent, we informed center we would be unable to make the crossing. He said 'stand by'. Center then after about 20 seconds said 'do the best you can'. I must have been preoccupied and thought for no good reason crossing was at bna not 30 mi southwest of bna. After ATC query, copilot (PNF) stated. He wondered what was up my sleeve. After discussing situation we both decided to utilize better cockpit resource management and inform the other when something doesn't look right. I should have required ATC to specify another clearance rather than accept 'do the best you can'. File this under 'not minding the store'!

Title: FLT CREW OF MLG DELAYS DESCENT AND DESCENDS TOO SLOWLY TO MEET CROSSING RESTRICTION.

Narrative: CRUISING AT FL240, GIVEN CLRNC TO CROSS 30 MI SW OF BNA AT 8000'. POSITION AT TIME WAS APPROX 60 MI SW OF GHM. APCHING GHM, CENTER ASKED IF WE WOULD MAKE OUR XING (APPROX 20 MI TO LOSE 16,000' AND SLOW TO 250 KTS). I IMMEDIATELY TURNED OFF AUTOPLT, DEPLOYED SPEED BRAKES AND STARTED DSCNT. ONCE IN DSCNT, WE INFORMED CENTER WE WOULD BE UNABLE TO MAKE THE XING. HE SAID 'STAND BY'. CENTER THEN AFTER ABOUT 20 SECONDS SAID 'DO THE BEST YOU CAN'. I MUST HAVE BEEN PREOCCUPIED AND THOUGHT FOR NO GOOD REASON XING WAS AT BNA NOT 30 MI SW OF BNA. AFTER ATC QUERY, COPLT (PNF) STATED. HE WONDERED WHAT WAS UP MY SLEEVE. AFTER DISCUSSING SITUATION WE BOTH DECIDED TO UTILIZE BETTER COCKPIT RESOURCE MGMNT AND INFORM THE OTHER WHEN SOMETHING DOESN'T LOOK RIGHT. I SHOULD HAVE REQUIRED ATC TO SPECIFY ANOTHER CLRNC RATHER THAN ACCEPT 'DO THE BEST YOU CAN'. FILE THIS UNDER 'NOT MINDING THE STORE'!
