Narrative:
After takeoff; we noted a vibration and rumble. We were unable to determine its origin and elected to return to our departure airport for landing. The vibration and noise continued after landing and got worse during the taxi in to the ramp. Post-flight inspection by maintenance control determined that the starter generator had failed. Small chunks of metal were removed from the faulty component.
