Narrative:
New first officer out of IOE was the pilot flying. Accepted a visual approach to runway 25L. Visually saw terrain and saw terrain altitude 4;609 ft. First officer asked for 4;900 ft to which I said there is terrain at 4;609; no lower than 6;000 as we made a wide left downwind. Approaching the terrain we got a terrain warning and climbed to 6;500 ft. ATC never said anything to us.
