Narrative:

New first officer out of IOE was the pilot flying. Accepted a visual approach to runway 25L. Visually saw terrain and saw terrain altitude 4;609 ft. First officer asked for 4;900 ft to which I said there is terrain at 4;609; no lower than 6;000 as we made a wide left downwind. Approaching the terrain we got a terrain warning and climbed to 6;500 ft. ATC never said anything to us.

Title: B737 Captain with new First Officer reports a terrain warning while on a wide left downwind visual approach at 6;000 FT for Runway 25L at LAS. The Captain had advised 6;000 FT until past the ridge at 4;609 FT; but the warning was activated and a climb to 6;500 FT initiated.
