Narrative:

At 16;800 and climbing for level off at 17;000; we encountered wake turbulence or windshear that caused buffeting and then an abrupt left wing low condition causing autopilot to fail. Pilot flying controlled aircraft immediately but while attempting to correct aircraft attitude; we climbed to 17;400 ft. We returned to 17;000 immediately and told ATC of event. He said it was not a problem and he cleared us to FL280.
