Narrative:
In cruise at FL350 we detected the scent of burning electrical wiring. This was followed shortly by failure of the EICAS; popping of EICAS circuit breaker and noticeable heat from the aircraft's center instrument panel. Small amounts of smoke were observed. Crew executed cabin smoke memory items; diverted to the nearest suitable alternate and landed uneventfully. After landing; no further smoke was observed by the crew. Crash fire rescue equipment observed no exterior anomalies; so we deplaned normally via jetbridge.
