Narrative:
I departed jfk for east hampton airport while talking to ny approach. I asked for a handoff for flight following. Approach handed me over to another ny approach controller who gave me a climb to 2500' MSL on course. My on course heading took me over frg airport. When I was directly over frg airport ny approach advised me that I didn't have a clearance through the air traffic area. I assumed that ny had gotten a clearance through the air traffic area since he hadn't advised me to do so. Before I entered the frg air traffic area I should have asked ny approach for the clearance or he could have given me a call before I entered the air traffic area telling me I didn't have a clearance through the frg air traffic area and I would have called the tower. Ny approach was not busy at the time.

Title: ROTORCRAFT USING FLT FOLLOWING ASSIGNED ALT WHICH CAUSED ACFT TO ENTER ATA. CTLR NOTIFIED CREW AFTER PENETRATION.
Narrative: I DEPARTED JFK FOR EAST HAMPTON ARPT WHILE TALKING TO NY APCH. I ASKED FOR A HANDOFF FOR FLT FOLLOWING. APCH HANDED ME OVER TO ANOTHER NY APCH CTLR WHO GAVE ME A CLIMB TO 2500' MSL ON COURSE. MY ON COURSE HDG TOOK ME OVER FRG ARPT. WHEN I WAS DIRECTLY OVER FRG ARPT NY APCH ADVISED ME THAT I DIDN'T HAVE A CLRNC THROUGH THE ATA. I ASSUMED THAT NY HAD GOTTEN A CLRNC THROUGH THE ATA SINCE HE HADN'T ADVISED ME TO DO SO. BEFORE I ENTERED THE FRG ATA I SHOULD HAVE ASKED NY APCH FOR THE CLRNC OR HE COULD HAVE GIVEN ME A CALL BEFORE I ENTERED THE ATA TELLING ME I DIDN'T HAVE A CLRNC THROUGH THE FRG ATA AND I WOULD HAVE CALLED THE TWR. NY APCH WAS NOT BUSY AT THE TIME.
