Narrative:
While in traffic pattern #3 on downwind aircraft #1 diverted to avoid aircraft on final starting ILS missed approach. #2 turned base in front of #2 on ILS causing that aircraft to slow. Observing and avoiding 2 aircraft deviating from the pattern, I did not see the 3RD on ILS short final. See drawing on back. Correction and prevention: this airport is by far too busy to remain uncontrolled. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states he did a go around and so did other pilot with whom he had near midair collision. Reporter stayed low over taxiway until determined what other aircraft was planning to do. Says field has about 4 FBO's on field, an ILS, VOR and NDB approach so many instructors use as a training area. Many instructors and students do not use CTAF because just too busy. He may contact FAA to see if traffic warrants a tower. Says they have more traffic than stapleton.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: UNCONTROLLED ARPT WITH HEAVY TRAFFIC IN PATTERN. NMAC WITH ACFT ON ILS STRAIGHT IN APCH.
Narrative: WHILE IN TFC PATTERN #3 ON DOWNWIND ACFT #1 DIVERTED TO AVOID ACFT ON FINAL STARTING ILS MISSED APCH. #2 TURNED BASE IN FRONT OF #2 ON ILS CAUSING THAT ACFT TO SLOW. OBSERVING AND AVOIDING 2 ACFT DEVIATING FROM THE PATTERN, I DID NOT SEE THE 3RD ON ILS SHORT FINAL. SEE DRAWING ON BACK. CORRECTION AND PREVENTION: THIS ARPT IS BY FAR TOO BUSY TO REMAIN UNCONTROLLED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: REPORTER STATES HE DID A GO AROUND AND SO DID OTHER PLT WITH WHOM HE HAD NMAC. REPORTER STAYED LOW OVER TXWY UNTIL DETERMINED WHAT OTHER ACFT WAS PLANNING TO DO. SAYS FIELD HAS ABOUT 4 FBO'S ON FIELD, AN ILS, VOR AND NDB APCH SO MANY INSTRUCTORS USE AS A TRAINING AREA. MANY INSTRUCTORS AND STUDENTS DO NOT USE CTAF BECAUSE JUST TOO BUSY. HE MAY CONTACT FAA TO SEE IF TFC WARRANTS A TWR. SAYS THEY HAVE MORE TFC THAN STAPLETON.
