Shortly after takeoff on [runway] 28R; experienced compressor stalls/surge number 1 (left) engine. Procedures handled in accordance with QRH. [We] returned for a normal underweight landing. After adrenaline rush of handling the emergency; fatigue set in and I felt I could not safely continue a late night flight.
