Narrative:
While at the hold line for runway 17L at dfw I experienced interference on my headset due to company frequency volume being left too high. While adjusting my audio panel I inadvertently turned the tower frequency off, when I turned tower back up I heard, '...traffic on 2 mi final, cleared for immediate takeoff.' I looked to my left and saw traffic at approximately 2 mi and heard the captain say 'that was for us'. I acknowledged receipt of the takeoff clearance while the captain released the brakes and began the takeoff roll. Approximately 200 yds into our roll we heard tower cancel takeoff clearance for a jet on 17R and order another jet on final approach to go around. At this point I am still not sure as to what happened but I would certainly feel a lot better if I would have heard the entire takeoff clearance. Later in flight while discussing the events with the captain, I learned that he did not hear a clear and concise clearance to takeoff either. What is a first officer to do in such an instance, given the attitude of most capts about cockpit resource management?
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: POSSIBLE UNAUTH TKOF. DID NOT HEAR ENTIRE CLRNC.
Narrative: WHILE AT THE HOLD LINE FOR RWY 17L AT DFW I EXPERIENCED INTERFERENCE ON MY HEADSET DUE TO COMPANY FREQ VOLUME BEING LEFT TOO HIGH. WHILE ADJUSTING MY AUDIO PANEL I INADVERTENTLY TURNED THE TWR FREQ OFF, WHEN I TURNED TWR BACK UP I HEARD, '...TFC ON 2 MI FINAL, CLRED FOR IMMEDIATE TKOF.' I LOOKED TO MY LEFT AND SAW TFC AT APPROX 2 MI AND HEARD THE CAPT SAY 'THAT WAS FOR US'. I ACKNOWLEDGED RECEIPT OF THE TKOF CLRNC WHILE THE CAPT RELEASED THE BRAKES AND BEGAN THE TKOF ROLL. APPROX 200 YDS INTO OUR ROLL WE HEARD TWR CANCEL TKOF CLRNC FOR A JET ON 17R AND ORDER ANOTHER JET ON FINAL APCH TO GO AROUND. AT THIS POINT I AM STILL NOT SURE AS TO WHAT HAPPENED BUT I WOULD CERTAINLY FEEL A LOT BETTER IF I WOULD HAVE HEARD THE ENTIRE TKOF CLRNC. LATER IN FLT WHILE DISCUSSING THE EVENTS WITH THE CAPT, I LEARNED THAT HE DID NOT HEAR A CLEAR AND CONCISE CLRNC TO TKOF EITHER. WHAT IS A F/O TO DO IN SUCH AN INSTANCE, GIVEN THE ATTITUDE OF MOST CAPTS ABOUT COCKPIT RESOURCE MGMNT?
