Narrative:
Student solo x-country. After takeoff from alb, I was notified by albany departure that aircraft was not replying mode C. I checked the transponder and all electrical systems, but this did not help. I proceeded direct ore, and phoned the flying school where aircraft is based, since I could not return to base, located under the new york TCA, according to the new far. They suggested that I deviate to 12N (aeroflex) and call them again, which I did. In the meantime I contacted newark approach by phone, who told me to establish radar contact in the air and be vectored in to mmu. This was accomplished without incident.

Title: STUDENT PLT ON FIRST SOLO CROSS COUNTRY EXPERIENCES TRANSPONDER FAILURE, FOLLOWS PROCS BY THE 'BOOK'.
Narrative: STUDENT SOLO X-COUNTRY. AFTER TKOF FROM ALB, I WAS NOTIFIED BY ALBANY DEP THAT ACFT WAS NOT REPLYING MODE C. I CHECKED THE XPONDER AND ALL ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS, BUT THIS DID NOT HELP. I PROCEEDED DIRECT ORE, AND PHONED THE FLYING SCHOOL WHERE ACFT IS BASED, SINCE I COULD NOT RETURN TO BASE, LOCATED UNDER THE NEW YORK TCA, ACCORDING TO THE NEW FAR. THEY SUGGESTED THAT I DEVIATE TO 12N (AEROFLEX) AND CALL THEM AGAIN, WHICH I DID. IN THE MEANTIME I CONTACTED NEWARK APCH BY PHONE, WHO TOLD ME TO ESTABLISH RADAR CONTACT IN THE AIR AND BE VECTORED IN TO MMU. THIS WAS ACCOMPLISHED WITHOUT INCIDENT.
