Narrative:
A new aircraft was procured, and the flight again departed the gate. Taxi instructions were issued. I heard them to be 'taxi runway 18, at the approach end of runway 27, taxi down 23, hold short of 18.' to the best of my recollection, I responded 'down 23 for 18.' because of runway closings, this taxi route had been used for several days, and was the same instruction we had received on the previous taxi. As we were about to taxi onto 23, I asked the first officer to 'clear right'. He responded 'clear right.' as we taxied onto the runway, ground instructed us 'aircraft on short final, clear the runway immediately, you were instructed to hold short.' although it is possible that the taxi instructions did require us to hold short of 23, I do not recall this being the case. The large number of departures we make in a day makes it nearly impossible to keep track of (we departed the gate 9 times on this day). I am also disappointed with our 'clear right' procedure. The first officer did not note the aircraft on final, and I know he looked.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: REPORTER FLT BELIEVED THEY WERE CLEARED TO TAXI VIA RWY DUE TO CONSTRUCTION AND READ BACK CLRNC TO DO SAME. ATCT GND CTLR INTENDED THEM TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY.
Narrative: A NEW ACFT WAS PROCURED, AND THE FLT AGAIN DEPARTED THE GATE. TAXI INSTRUCTIONS WERE ISSUED. I HEARD THEM TO BE 'TAXI RWY 18, AT THE APCH END OF RWY 27, TAXI DOWN 23, HOLD SHORT OF 18.' TO THE BEST OF MY RECOLLECTION, I RESPONDED 'DOWN 23 FOR 18.' BECAUSE OF RWY CLOSINGS, THIS TAXI ROUTE HAD BEEN USED FOR SEVERAL DAYS, AND WAS THE SAME INSTRUCTION WE HAD RECEIVED ON THE PREVIOUS TAXI. AS WE WERE ABOUT TO TAXI ONTO 23, I ASKED THE F/O TO 'CLEAR RIGHT'. HE RESPONDED 'CLEAR RIGHT.' AS WE TAXIED ONTO THE RWY, GND INSTRUCTED US 'ACFT ON SHORT FINAL, CLEAR THE RWY IMMEDIATELY, YOU WERE INSTRUCTED TO HOLD SHORT.' ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE TAXI INSTRUCTIONS DID REQUIRE US TO HOLD SHORT OF 23, I DO NOT RECALL THIS BEING THE CASE. THE LARGE NUMBER OF DEPS WE MAKE IN A DAY MAKES IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP TRACK OF (WE DEPARTED THE GATE 9 TIMES ON THIS DAY). I AM ALSO DISAPPOINTED WITH OUR 'CLEAR RIGHT' PROC. THE F/O DID NOT NOTE THE ACFT ON FINAL, AND I KNOW HE LOOKED.
