Narrative:
On taxi out to takeoff, ground control reports that runway 16L is closed from the approach end to intersection A1, leaving approximately 9100' remaining for takeoff. They (ground) then asked if I could make my takeoff from intersection A1, since we used to make takeoffs from intersection A1 and knowing that 9100' posed no performance problem for the aircraft. I said yes. After an uneventful takeoff and level off at altitude I checked my airline operations specifications to discover that takeoffs from intersection A1/runway 16L are no longer authorized (at least it wasn't in print) and they had removed the performance data from the performance book in regard to intersection takeoffs on runway 16L. ATIS should have reflected that runway 16L was temporarily, partially closed. This would have given more time to get the books out and do some research. The company is continually changing the operations specifications which occasionally gives rise to a certain amount of confusion over which rule/policy is current.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: FLT CREW OF MLG ACCEPTED AN INTERSECTION TKOF WITH 9000' RWY REMAINING. LATER INFLT CHECKED COMPANY OPERATIONS MANUAL AND REALIZED POLICY REGARDING INTERSECTION TKOFS FROM THAT RWY HAD BEEN CHANGED.
Narrative: ON TAXI OUT TO TKOF, GND CTL REPORTS THAT RWY 16L IS CLOSED FROM THE APCH END TO INTXN A1, LEAVING APPROX 9100' REMAINING FOR TKOF. THEY (GND) THEN ASKED IF I COULD MAKE MY TKOF FROM INTXN A1, SINCE WE USED TO MAKE TKOFS FROM INTXN A1 AND KNOWING THAT 9100' POSED NO PERFORMANCE PROBLEM FOR THE ACFT. I SAID YES. AFTER AN UNEVENTFUL TKOF AND LEVEL OFF AT ALT I CHECKED MY AIRLINE OPS SPECS TO DISCOVER THAT TKOFS FROM INTXN A1/RWY 16L ARE NO LONGER AUTHORIZED (AT LEAST IT WASN'T IN PRINT) AND THEY HAD REMOVED THE PERFORMANCE DATA FROM THE PERFORMANCE BOOK IN REGARD TO INTXN TKOFS ON RWY 16L. ATIS SHOULD HAVE REFLECTED THAT RWY 16L WAS TEMPORARILY, PARTIALLY CLOSED. THIS WOULD HAVE GIVEN MORE TIME TO GET THE BOOKS OUT AND DO SOME RESEARCH. THE COMPANY IS CONTINUALLY CHANGING THE OPS SPECS WHICH OCCASIONALLY GIVES RISE TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF CONFUSION OVER WHICH RULE/POLICY IS CURRENT.
