Narrative:
Aircraft started to lose power and slowed to about 2200 RPM. I checked for carburetor ice and the mags. The engine would not run on one magnetic so I checked all gauges and continued on my way. A short time later, the engine quit and windmilled. I was at about 600' AGL by now so had to find a place to land. There was a plowed field so I landed uphill to the south. The field was freshly tilled and there was no rain for months. The field was about 1 inch deep in soft dirt. The rollout was fine until about 5 or 10 mph when the wheels sank into the dusk and the plane turned up on its nose and then on over. I was not injured and the aircraft was only slightly damaged. Top of rudder, left lift strut, and windshield. I feel the incident could have been avoided if I had landed on the county road but there was traffic on it at the time.
