Narrative:
During a practice approach in visual conditions under VFR flight following at aurora state airport in oregon the student was practicing landings from a straight in on short final to approach another airplane was seen on the runway landing in the opposite direction. We took evasive action by doing an immediate go-around and offset to the right. It was found that the volume control was set very low and the other aircraft's radio communications were not heard.

Title: A student and instructor pilot aboard a C172 initiated a go-around on short final when they observed an aircraft landing opposite direction on the same runway. Because their communication radio volume was turned low they had not heard transmissions from the other aircraft.
