Narrative:

Flight from niagara falls, ny; to fort wayne, in. Niagara falls international is located 4 mi from the perimeter of buf arsa. On departure from niagara I was advised to contact buf approach by 4 mi out. My first 2 attempts to contact buf were not successful. My third attempt on a back-up radio was successful. My altitude was verified and I was advised to change heading and was given a transponder code, then given my original heading. I was also advised that I had entered the arsa west/O permission and that I should call the fort wayne tower when I arrived. I also had a radio problem in the cle TCA. I called cle TCA prior to entry and was given a transponder code. Part way through the TCA my reception was somewhat broken. I gave the controller the information and he said my transmission was not readable, and I should continue on course. My attempt to make contact on the back-up radio was not successful. After about 10 mins I was able to get the radio back in service by flexing it back and forth in the case and re-established contact with TCA with no more problems. I took the aircraft to xx avionics in anderson, in. They determined that the radio had 2 problems: 1) dirty contacts, and 2) inadequate cooling. Both problems are being taken care of.
