Narrative:

On climb out, ATC gave a clearance to climb to 8000 ft for air carrier hea. We read this back and requested 5000 ft for our final altitude. ATC said he would pass on our request. Climbing through 4500 ft, ATC asked our altitude. We told him 4500 for 8000 ft, with a request for 5000 ft. He told us that 8000 ft clearance was for a same company gea, that we were only cleared to 4000 ft, and then told us us to maintain 5000 ft. No evasive action was required. Similar call signs, and confusion on ATC's part with these call signs, led to this incident.
