Narrative:
Crew smelled burned rubber on takeoff rotation out of atl. Captain asked departure control to call atl tower and have them check the runway for possible blown tire. Departure relayed that the runway was clear. On descent into bhm, landing gear warning horn sounded and red gear unsafe lights illuminated when the power was retarded and could be extinguished when horn cut out lever was pulled but would reoccur when the lever was released. Gear was lowered on approach, all indications were normal - gear down and locked. As a precaution, captain asked tower to visually check the gear and to have the emergency equipment standing by. Tower confirmed that the landing gear looked ok, and a normal landing was performed. Corrective maintenance was performed in bhm. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter states no indication of why crew smelled burned rubber. Repairs made were to landing gear accessory box, but reporter not sure of just exactly what the problem was.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: BURNED RUBBER SMELL ON TKOF. ON DESCENT GEAR WARNING HORN AND GEAR UNSAFE LIGHT ILLUMINATED.
Narrative: CREW SMELLED BURNED RUBBER ON TKOF ROTATION OUT OF ATL. CAPT ASKED DEP CTL TO CALL ATL TWR AND HAVE THEM CHECK THE RWY FOR POSSIBLE BLOWN TIRE. DEP RELAYED THAT THE RWY WAS CLEAR. ON DSCNT INTO BHM, LNDG GEAR WARNING HORN SOUNDED AND RED GEAR UNSAFE LIGHTS ILLUMINATED WHEN THE POWER WAS RETARDED AND COULD BE EXTINGUISHED WHEN HORN CUT OUT LEVER WAS PULLED BUT WOULD REOCCUR WHEN THE LEVER WAS RELEASED. GEAR WAS LOWERED ON APCH, ALL INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL - GEAR DOWN AND LOCKED. AS A PRECAUTION, CAPT ASKED TWR TO VISUALLY CHECK THE GEAR AND TO HAVE THE EMER EQUIPMENT STANDING BY. TWR CONFIRMED THAT THE LNDG GEAR LOOKED OK, AND A NORMAL LNDG WAS PERFORMED. CORRECTIVE MAINT WAS PERFORMED IN BHM. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH REPORTER REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: REPORTER STATES NO INDICATION OF WHY CREW SMELLED BURNED RUBBER. REPAIRS MADE WERE TO LNDG GEAR ACCESSORY BOX, BUT REPORTER NOT SURE OF JUST EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS.
