Narrative:

Upon departure from st augustine, fl (sgj), I called jax approach control and requested the instrument approach into craig field (crg). The controller gave me a squawk code, a heading, and an assigned altitude and informed me there were 2 aircraft in front of me on the approach. After being vectored onto the final approach course, he 'cleared me for the approach'. After passing the outer marker (5.3 DME), I requested a frequency change to tower, there was no reply. Again I requested a frequency change with no reply by approach control. On the third request, approach gave me the frequency to tower. I immediately called tower telling them straight in on a 2.5 mi final. They replied asking me where I had come from. Because of my late turn over, one aircraft on base was required to go around.
