Narrative:

First officer flying aircraft on autoplt with flight guidance computer commands. He has 1 1/2 yrs experience as first officer and 20 as F/east (less than 300 hours in this advanced version). This air carrier mixes all variants of this type. Aircraft was on n-erly heading at 4000' south of ILS course. I and the ape 186 degree right set in on my navigation for identify of the andey intersection. I commented to the first officer that we were being turned on west of andey (given turn to 330 degrees and clearance to 2700'). He programmed the FMC correctly, but was fast (240 KIAS). We were given a speed reduction to 170 KIAS to follow traffic ahead and turn to 300 degrees to intercept the ILS and cleared for the approach. The first officer selected IAS hold in pitch mode as the aircraft was capturing 2700'. This action cancelled the altitude capture. Simultaneously he asked for more flap and gear extension. I configured the aircraft and noticed the flight mode annunciator did not have an altitude mode in the pitch window and remarked that the localizer was alive, also. He became overloaded and as the aircraft approached 2700' I disconnected the autoplt and leveled the aircraft at 2550' and climbed back to 2700'. Requested vectors to another approach. Gave aircraft back to first officer. He flew the next approach slower and on short final. Had to go around due to aircraft missing a turn-off. He still failed to manage his speed properly inside the final approach fix and had difficulty with the automated missed approach/go around procedures. Landed on next approach.

Narrative: F/O FLYING ACFT ON AUTOPLT WITH FLT GUIDANCE COMPUTER COMMANDS. HE HAS 1 1/2 YRS EXPERIENCE AS F/O AND 20 AS F/E (LESS THAN 300 HRS IN THIS ADVANCED VERSION). THIS ACR MIXES ALL VARIANTS OF THIS TYPE. ACFT WAS ON N-ERLY HDG AT 4000' S OF ILS COURSE. I AND THE APE 186 DEG R SET IN ON MY NAV FOR IDENT OF THE ANDEY INTXN. I COMMENTED TO THE F/O THAT WE WERE BEING TURNED ON W OF ANDEY (GIVEN TURN TO 330 DEGS AND CLRNC TO 2700'). HE PROGRAMMED THE FMC CORRECTLY, BUT WAS FAST (240 KIAS). WE WERE GIVEN A SPD REDUCTION TO 170 KIAS TO FOLLOW TFC AHEAD AND TURN TO 300 DEGS TO INTERCEPT THE ILS AND CLRED FOR THE APCH. THE F/O SELECTED IAS HOLD IN PITCH MODE AS THE ACFT WAS CAPTURING 2700'. THIS ACTION CANCELLED THE ALT CAPTURE. SIMULTANEOUSLY HE ASKED FOR MORE FLAP AND GEAR EXTENSION. I CONFIGURED THE ACFT AND NOTICED THE FLT MODE ANNUNCIATOR DID NOT HAVE AN ALT MODE IN THE PITCH WINDOW AND REMARKED THAT THE LOC WAS ALIVE, ALSO. HE BECAME OVERLOADED AND AS THE ACFT APCHED 2700' I DISCONNECTED THE AUTOPLT AND LEVELED THE ACFT AT 2550' AND CLBED BACK TO 2700'. REQUESTED VECTORS TO ANOTHER APCH. GAVE ACFT BACK TO F/O. HE FLEW THE NEXT APCH SLOWER AND ON SHORT FINAL. HAD TO GO AROUND DUE TO ACFT MISSING A TURN-OFF. HE STILL FAILED TO MANAGE HIS SPD PROPERLY INSIDE THE FINAL APCH FIX AND HAD DIFFICULTY WITH THE AUTOMATED MISSED APCH/GAR PROCS. LANDED ON NEXT APCH.
