Narrative:
On climb out slight odor of smoke detected, began a plan in the event smoke confirmed (got out abnormal checklist, determined nearest airport). Smoke confirmed, so abnormal checklist was started. Smoke started getting very dense, so immediate turn to pdx and requested lower altitude. Started turn and descent while first officer completed checklist, which included bringing cabin up to 9500'. Warning horn began to sound. Looked at warning panel and all warning lights were on. Warning horn was cabin altitude warning, however cabin indicated only 9500'. Finally silenced warning horn (should have silenced horn sooner, but spent time trying to determine why it was sounding with cabin still at 9500'). Smoke began to clear away. While trying to determine cause of all warning lights, I realized all lights were on. Apparently when F/a wanted entry to cockpit, first officer pushed the light test button instead of cockpit door unlock switch, which are next to each other.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR WDB SMOKE IN COCKPIT DURING CLIMB. RETURN LAND.
Narrative: ON CLBOUT SLIGHT ODOR OF SMOKE DETECTED, BEGAN A PLAN IN THE EVENT SMOKE CONFIRMED (GOT OUT ABNORMAL CHKLIST, DETERMINED NEAREST ARPT). SMOKE CONFIRMED, SO ABNORMAL CHKLIST WAS STARTED. SMOKE STARTED GETTING VERY DENSE, SO IMMEDIATE TURN TO PDX AND REQUESTED LOWER ALT. STARTED TURN AND DSCNT WHILE F/O COMPLETED CHKLIST, WHICH INCLUDED BRINGING CABIN UP TO 9500'. WARNING HORN BEGAN TO SOUND. LOOKED AT WARNING PANEL AND ALL WARNING LIGHTS WERE ON. WARNING HORN WAS CABIN ALT WARNING, HOWEVER CABIN INDICATED ONLY 9500'. APPARENTLY WHEN F/A WANTED ENTRY TO COCKPIT, F/O PUSHED THE LIGHT TEST BUTTON INSTEAD OF COCKPIT DOOR UNLOCK SWITCH, WHICH ARE NEXT TO EACH OTHER.
