Narrative:
After normal pushback and engine start; I called for taxi instructions. We were given; 'taxi to runway 8; north; N1; inner ramp; south; hold short S2.' I wrote the instructions down as they were given; read the clearance back; and we began to taxi. As we left the ramp and joined north; the captain wanted clarification on our hold short instruction. I called ground back and asked for confirmation of our taxi instructions. Again; ground confirmed we should hold short of S2. We proceeded to taxi from north to N1; then along the inner ramp around the barriers blocking a portion of the south taxiway that was closed. Once clear of the barriers; the captain joined taxiway south as our instructions directed. We taxied on south and stopped short of S2. At this point; the ground controller called us and said that the south taxiway was closed and 'crumbling' and we should relocate to the ramp taxi lane. The captain complied and relocated to the ramp taxi lane with no incident. We proceeded to the end of the runway and continued with a normal takeoff and departure.the captain and I both had the taxi charts out and visible and in use. We both verified the taxi instructions and each turn; especially since I've only been through sju one other time. There is a note on the chart that says south is closed between S2-S5; but neither of us saw it because we were zooming in to verify the turns on the poorly marked airfield and taxiways. The note also says that the taxiway is closed; lighted; and barricaded; which isn't true. There is a small portion of the taxiway that is barricaded (between S4-S5); and we both thought that was the closed portion. There is no other indication that the rest of the taxiway is closed at all.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: An air carrier crew was cleared to taxi to SJU Runway 8; N; N1; inner ramp; hold short of S2. While taxiing; both pilot's EFBs were zoomed in; therefore neither pilot saw the chart note that Taxiway S was closed between S2 and S5 and remained on Taxiway S.
