Narrative:
On sep/sat/89 obtained WX briefing 2 times for direct flight from reno, nv to cma, ca. Last briefing obtained 1/2 hour before takeoff. FSS stated no problem. VFR all the way to cma ceiling was 18,000'. Filed flight plan and left reno on 160 degree heading. Approximately 30 min after liftoff made 180 degree turn back due to deteriorating WX in line of flight. Rain and clouds at ground level and above 12,000'. After 180 degree immediately entered clouds and rain that had closed in behind us. 3 C's: (climbed to 13,500, called and conferred.) used emergency frequency to ask for help and oakland approach responded and gave us headings and altitudes for approximately :50 mins. Broke out of clouds approximately 5000' over stockton, ca, and stockton tower cleared us to land. All 4 on board were extremely happy to leave airplane at that time. WX briefing was inaccurate or WX changed dramatically while we were in air.
