Narrative:
Last day of 3 day trip. Evening departure after 19 hour layover. Arrived at airport approximately 40 minutes prior to pushback. Went to gate to drop off bags. First officer stayed to complete preflight. I went to ops to flight plan. 25 minutes prior to push I returned to aircraft. Aircraft was not fueled. During preflight; first officer notified me that the first officer pubs bag was out of date. I confirmed that the ca's bag was also out of date. Since we had been using our current and up to date ipads for the jeppesen charts; I assumed that we would be okay. Also due to the fact that we were not at a hub; I did not think we would be able to replace the bags. We had a late push due to fuel servicing. After we were at cruise; I checked and found out that I was supposed to contact the fodm (flight operations documentation manager) and get a meter authorizing us to proceed. I immediately informed fodm via ACARS and fodm sent me the required meter. I placed the meter in the ca's pubs bag as directed. The jeppesen pubs had been expired and we were the only ones that caught it after 2 days.
