Narrative:

We were flight abc at 7000' talking to ZNY on 134.8 because we were so close to unv (an uncontrolled field) and too high to make a comfortable descent (is unpressurized). I cancelled IFR as ZNY would not give us lower. The response was 'roger, flight abc.' I think he said 'cancelling' also, but nothing more. He began talking to other aircraft in his control--he was busy. I began my descent and went to change frequencys to 122.8 for advisories after hearing 'roger flight ATC.' 2 mins later I heard another company aircraft say on our company frequency: 'ny is looking for you on 134.8,' so I went back to 134.8 and said: 'ny, this is flight abc--we already cancelled. He said 'yes, but I just wanted to advise you of VFR traffic at 6500' and 5 mi, and also that you should be on code 1200 now.' my error--I was still on the IFR transponder code. The controller sounded irritated that I cancelled IFR. I apologized about not changing the code to 1200. The question is: did I received a valid 'receipt of IFR cancellation' when the controller responded 'roger flight abc (cancelling)'? I feel all IFR cancellations should be responded to by the standard, 'roger flight abc, IFR cancellation received at 1110, squawk 1200, cleared to leave center frequency,' or 'stay with me for advisories.' because of workload and looking outside for pattern traffic, I forgot to change the transponder code.

Title: LTT FLT CREW DID NOT CHANGE TRANSPONDER CODE TO PROPER NUMBER AFTER CANCELLING IFR WITH CENTER.

Narrative: WE WERE FLT ABC AT 7000' TALKING TO ZNY ON 134.8 BECAUSE WE WERE SO CLOSE TO UNV (AN UNCONTROLLED FIELD) AND TOO HIGH TO MAKE A COMFORTABLE DSCNT (IS UNPRESSURIZED). I CANCELLED IFR AS ZNY WOULD NOT GIVE US LOWER. THE RESPONSE WAS 'ROGER, FLT ABC.' I THINK HE SAID 'CANCELLING' ALSO, BUT NOTHING MORE. HE BEGAN TALKING TO OTHER ACFT IN HIS CTL--HE WAS BUSY. I BEGAN MY DSCNT AND WENT TO CHANGE FREQS TO 122.8 FOR ADVISORIES AFTER HEARING 'ROGER FLT ATC.' 2 MINS LATER I HEARD ANOTHER COMPANY ACFT SAY ON OUR COMPANY FREQ: 'NY IS LOOKING FOR YOU ON 134.8,' SO I WENT BACK TO 134.8 AND SAID: 'NY, THIS IS FLT ABC--WE ALREADY CANCELLED. HE SAID 'YES, BUT I JUST WANTED TO ADVISE YOU OF VFR TFC AT 6500' AND 5 MI, AND ALSO THAT YOU SHOULD BE ON CODE 1200 NOW.' MY ERROR--I WAS STILL ON THE IFR XPONDER CODE. THE CTLR SOUNDED IRRITATED THAT I CANCELLED IFR. I APOLOGIZED ABOUT NOT CHANGING THE CODE TO 1200. THE QUESTION IS: DID I RECEIVED A VALID 'RECEIPT OF IFR CANCELLATION' WHEN THE CTLR RESPONDED 'ROGER FLT ABC (CANCELLING)'? I FEEL ALL IFR CANCELLATIONS SHOULD BE RESPONDED TO BY THE STANDARD, 'ROGER FLT ABC, IFR CANCELLATION RECEIVED AT 1110, SQUAWK 1200, CLRED TO LEAVE CENTER FREQ,' OR 'STAY WITH ME FOR ADVISORIES.' BECAUSE OF WORKLOAD AND LOOKING OUTSIDE FOR PATTERN TFC, I FORGOT TO CHANGE THE XPONDER CODE.
