Narrative:
I obtained IFR clearance and taxi instructions for departure runway 23L at rdu. While on taxi to run-up area for 23L, I crossed the hold line for that runway inadvertently. The run-up pad extends beyond the hold line, and with the sun setting to the west, it is impossible to see the line until you have crossed it. The run-up pad is recessed and extends past the hold line, giving the impression the hold line is closer to the runway. Tower advised of the error. That hold line should be repainted as it was faded considerably and extended into the run-up pad adjacent.

Title: PLT OF SMT CROSSED OVER HOLD LINE FOR RWY 23L AT RDU.
Narrative: I OBTAINED IFR CLRNC AND TAXI INSTRUCTIONS FOR DEP RWY 23L AT RDU. WHILE ON TAXI TO RUN-UP AREA FOR 23L, I CROSSED THE HOLD LINE FOR THAT RWY INADVERTENTLY. THE RUN-UP PAD EXTENDS BEYOND THE HOLD LINE, AND WITH THE SUN SETTING TO THE W, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE THE LINE UNTIL YOU HAVE CROSSED IT. THE RUN-UP PAD IS RECESSED AND EXTENDS PAST THE HOLD LINE, GIVING THE IMPRESSION THE HOLD LINE IS CLOSER TO THE RWY. TWR ADVISED OF THE ERROR. THAT HOLD LINE SHOULD BE REPAINTED AS IT WAS FADED CONSIDERABLY AND EXTENDED INTO THE RUN-UP PAD ADJACENT.
