Narrative:
Extract fan failure in cruise at 36;000 feet. Audible fan rotation and wind-down as the bearing seized followed immediately by perceptible smoke odor; extract fan ECAM and extract fan switch 'fault' illuminated. Donned masks and accomplished emergency descent. Blue action step directed extract switch--ovrd. Accomplished avionics smoke QRH for perceptible smoke. Smoke dissipated quickly. Flew normal approach and landing (not over-weight) at nearest suitable airport. Aircraft deemed safe by fire department and taxied to the gate.
