Narrative:
Turning off runway 4L at ewr, I was instructed to taxi via microphone, sierra and outer. The airport sheet (taxi chart) shows sierra is/becomes the inner. I misunderstood the instructions, thinking microphone, sierra stay, on that to the gate. I guess if the inner was just marked 'I,' and didn't automatically become sierra, it would be more clear.

Narrative: TURNING OFF RWY 4L AT EWR, I WAS INSTRUCTED TO TAXI VIA MIKE, SIERRA AND OUTER. THE ARPT SHEET (TAXI CHART) SHOWS SIERRA IS/BECOMES THE INNER. I MISUNDERSTOOD THE INSTRUCTIONS, THINKING MIKE, SIERRA STAY, ON THAT TO THE GATE. I GUESS IF THE INNER WAS JUST MARKED 'I,' AND DIDN'T AUTOMATICALLY BECOME SIERRA, IT WOULD BE MORE CLEAR.
