Narrative:
I inadvertently landed on the taxiway for a new runway 22 which was under construction. I tuned in ATIS and received information. The report stated that runway 22E was under construction. 5 mi from the airport I changed to adams tower frequency and was told that I was cleared to land on 22. I saw the 22E under construction and to the right of that what I thought was being the original 22. I turned on final for the assumed 22 and landed. The tower asked for my location. I answered that I was on the runway to the right of 22 under construction. Tower replied that I had landed on the taxiway for the new 22. There were no markings on the taxiway and I thought that the original 22 was redone and the markings were not placed on the redone strip. I was instructed to give the tower a call and describe my actions. The problem arose from my first time coming into adams and the sectional and flight directory has only one 22 pictured. Contributing factors were that there was no markings on the taxiway and hangars were blocking my field of vision to the markings on the original 22. Corrective actions can be for the tower to keep a closer observation of aircraft in the pattern. Also for the pilot not to assume so much in an unfamiliar airport.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: GA SMA LANDED ON A TXWY FOR A NEW RWY UNDER CONSTRUCTION, THINKING HE WAS ON THE OLD RWY.
Narrative: I INADVERTENTLY LANDED ON THE TXWY FOR A NEW RWY 22 WHICH WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. I TUNED IN ATIS AND RECEIVED INFO. THE RPT STATED THAT RWY 22E WAS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. 5 MI FROM THE ARPT I CHANGED TO ADAMS TWR FREQ AND WAS TOLD THAT I WAS CLRED TO LAND ON 22. I SAW THE 22E UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND TO THE RIGHT OF THAT WHAT I THOUGHT WAS BEING THE ORIGINAL 22. I TURNED ON FINAL FOR THE ASSUMED 22 AND LANDED. THE TWR ASKED FOR MY LOCATION. I ANSWERED THAT I WAS ON THE RWY TO THE RIGHT OF 22 UNDER CONSTRUCTION. TWR REPLIED THAT I HAD LANDED ON THE TXWY FOR THE NEW 22. THERE WERE NO MARKINGS ON THE TXWY AND I THOUGHT THAT THE ORIGINAL 22 WAS REDONE AND THE MARKINGS WERE NOT PLACED ON THE REDONE STRIP. I WAS INSTRUCTED TO GIVE THE TWR A CALL AND DESCRIBE MY ACTIONS. THE PROB AROSE FROM MY FIRST TIME COMING INTO ADAMS AND THE SECTIONAL AND FLT DIRECTORY HAS ONLY ONE 22 PICTURED. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS WERE THAT THERE WAS NO MARKINGS ON THE TXWY AND HANGARS WERE BLOCKING MY FIELD OF VISION TO THE MARKINGS ON THE ORIGINAL 22. CORRECTIVE ACTIONS CAN BE FOR THE TWR TO KEEP A CLOSER OBSERVATION OF ACFT IN THE PATTERN. ALSO FOR THE PLT NOT TO ASSUME SO MUCH IN AN UNFAMILIAR ARPT.
