Narrative:
Unfamiliar airport. ILS approach * G/south O/south * O/M O/south * displaced threshold. Brought in high. Trying to get down, trying to verify distance out on the localizer. Picked up runway lights and checking sight picture for visibility G/south. 2-M airplane, running final descent approach checklist. Had been cleared for the approach, but not given a tower frequency by approach control. Approach never said switch to tower--too busy! Landed and went to switch to ground and was still on approach control frequency. Phoned tower on ground and told 'no problem.' on departure used same frequency for ground and tower takeoff. This was in no way a dangerous situation, but stresses what happens when too many things are happening at once. There were suitable runways with a precision approach (equipment working) which we requested, but told to use the runway we did. I understand that the ILS on this runway has had elements OTS for many months.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: LANDED WITHOUT CLRNC. SOME OF ILS EQUIPMENT OUT OF SERVICE.
Narrative: UNFAMILIAR ARPT. ILS APCH * G/S O/S * O/M O/S * DISPLACED THRESHOLD. BROUGHT IN HIGH. TRYING TO GET DOWN, TRYING TO VERIFY DISTANCE OUT ON THE LOC. PICKED UP RWY LIGHTS AND CHKING SIGHT PICTURE FOR VIS G/S. 2-M AIRPLANE, RUNNING FINAL DSCNT APCH CHKLIST. HAD BEEN CLRED FOR THE APCH, BUT NOT GIVEN A TWR FREQ BY APCH CTL. APCH NEVER SAID SWITCH TO TWR--TOO BUSY! LANDED AND WENT TO SWITCH TO GND AND WAS STILL ON APCH CTL FREQ. PHONED TWR ON GND AND TOLD 'NO PROB.' ON DEP USED SAME FREQ FOR GND AND TWR TKOF. THIS WAS IN NO WAY A DANGEROUS SITUATION, BUT STRESSES WHAT HAPPENS WHEN TOO MANY THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT ONCE. THERE WERE SUITABLE RWYS WITH A PRECISION APCH (EQUIP WORKING) WHICH WE REQUESTED, BUT TOLD TO USE THE RWY WE DID. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE ILS ON THIS RWY HAS HAD ELEMENTS OTS FOR MANY MONTHS.
